Care guide
Simple ways to keep your piece soft, safe and treasured for years.
Washing
Your piece is organic cotton, embroidered with your baby's name. A little care keeps both soft and bright.
Turn it inside out and wash cold or at 30°C on a gentle cycle, with similar colours. A laundry bag gives the embroidery extra protection.
Use a mild, baby-friendly detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener: softener coats the fibres and makes muslin less breathable.
Muslin gets softer with every wash and can shrink a little the first time. That is normal.
Drying
Line dry in the shade or lay it flat. Strong sun can fade the thread colours over time.
Avoid the tumble dryer if you can. If you need it, use the lowest heat.
To iron, use a low setting on the reverse side, and never iron directly over the embroidery.
Swaddling in 4 steps
- Lay the swaddle flat in a diamond shape and fold the top corner down. Lay your baby on their back with their shoulders just below the fold.
- Place their left arm gently by their side. Bring the left side of the swaddle across their chest and tuck it under their body.
- Fold the bottom corner up loosely over their feet, leaving room for their legs to bend up and out at the hips.
- Place their right arm by their side, then bring the right side across and tuck it in. You should be able to slide two fingers between the swaddle and their chest.
Safe sleep
Always lay your baby down to sleep on their back, on a firm, flat mattress in their own cot.
Keep the cot clear: no pillows, bumpers, toys or loose blankets. Loveys and blankets are for cuddles while you are with them, not for the cot.
Keep a swaddle snug around the chest but loose at the hips and legs. Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of trying to roll over.
Muslin is light and breathable, but babies can still get too warm. Dress them in light layers, keep the room comfortable and never cover their head.
If you have any questions about your baby's sleep, your paediatrician is the best person to ask.
Storing it as a keepsake
When it is time to put a piece away, wash it and let it dry completely first.
Fold it loosely and wrap it in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton pillowcase. Keep it somewhere cool, dark and dry, and avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
Refold it now and then so creases don't set in. One day it may wrap the next little one.
